MediaTek will introduce the new generation of its 5G SoCs later this week when the mobile chip specialist discloses its shipment goal next year, according to sources familiar with the matter.

MediaTek rolled out its first 5G SoC designed for sub-GHz networks in the second quarter of 2019. At its upcoming product launch event, the company will introduce its second SoC for sub-6GHz in two versions - one highlighting its cost optimization and the other coming with enhanced performance - targeting first-half 2020 for their releases, the sources said.

MediaTek is looking to lead the sub-6GHz market segment as major China-based smartphone brands are reportedly among its clients, the sources indicated. MediaTek is expected to grab a 40-50% share of China's 5G chip market in 2020, the sources said.

MediaTek remarked previously that about 140 million 5G smartphones would be shipped globally in 2020, with 100 million units destined to China. While maintaining its outlook for the time being, MediaTek will remain aggressive in its 5G product roadmap, according to company CEO Rick Tsai.

Some market observers predict as many as 200 million 5G smartphones will be shipped next year.

In addition, MediaTek later in 2020 will introduce its 5G SoC supporting mmWave standards, according to industry sources. The mobile SoC firm is expected to launch a total of 3-4 5G SoC series next year.

MediaTek reportedly contracts TSMC to manufacture its 5G SoCs.
