MediaTek is expected to start shipping its first-generation 5G SoC chips later in the fourth quarter of 2019, for which the chipmaker is likely to post a slight drop or flat growth sequentially in revenues, according to media reports.
MediaTek will kick off its 5G chip shipments in December, Taiwan's media reports quoted a Morgan Stanely analyst as indicating. Codenamed MT6885, MediaTek's first 5G SoC series will power new-generation smartphones slated for launch in the first half of 2020, they said.
MediaTek has started delivering samples of its first single-chip 5G solution designed for sub-6GHz networks since the third quarter of 2019, and expects volume production of the chip to kick off in the first quarter of 2020, company president Joe Chen was quoted as saying in previous reports.
MediaTek has reported revenues grew about 2% sequentially and 1.7% on year to NT$23.49 billion (US$767.8 million) in September 2019. Revenues for the third quarter came to NT$67.22 billion, rising around 9% on quarter and meeting the company's guidance given previously.
