Taiwan market: WiMAX operator Vmax sets 2010 capex at NT$1.5 billion

Taiwan-based WiMAX operator Vmax Telecom plans to invest NT$1.5 billion (US$47 million) to expand its infrastructure in the Taipei metropolitan area in 2010, according to the company. The company's capex reached NT$1 billion in 2009.

To differentiate its WiMAX services from 3G services provided by other telecom carriers, Vmax is currently promoting its services in cooperation with taxi fleet operators in the Taipei area. The number of taxi equipped a WiMAX-enabled device from Vmax will reach 1,000 units at the end of March 2010 and further increase to 5,000 at the end of 2010 and to 20,000 at the end of 2011, the company projected.

Vmax also expects the number of subscribers for its WiMAX mobile services to reach 40,000 in 2010 and to 80,000 in 2011.
