DDI makers look to smaller displays as NB and TV demand loses momentum in 2H26

Large-size display driver ICs (DDIs) were a key revenue driver for many DDI suppliers during the first half of 2026. Taiwanese manufacturers said early notebook inventory build-up beginning in the first quarter of 2026, together with television restocking ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, allowed large-size DDI shipments to outperform the traditional seasonal slowdown.

As the market moves into the second half of the year, however, both demand drivers are expected to fade quickly. Whether mid-sized and small-size DDIs can offset the resulting gap will be critical to suppliers' performance during the traditional peak season.

A slowdown in TV-related demand is not unexpected, as similar shipment cycles have followed major international sporting events in recent years. By contrast, the unusually strong pull-in demand from notebook customers during the first half of 2026 exceeded industry expectations.

With leading PC brands already signaling that procurement will be adjusted downward in the second half, momentum during the traditional peak season is expected to soften. Only a limited number of suppliers that have secured orders for high-end OLED display driver ICs are likely to receive meaningful support.

Automotive and tablets set the pace for mid-sized DDIs

For mid-sized DDIs, the primary growth drivers remain the automotive and tablet markets. Industry sources said key indicators to watch include whether demand for automotive display drivers continues to recover, and whether customers are willing to accelerate the adoption of higher-end products such as OLED DDIs and timing controllers (T-Con).

Tablets also experienced a modest round of pull-in demand during the first half of 2026. Demand in the second half of the year will largely depend on market reception to upcoming new product launches.

Smartphones remain the anchor for small-size DDIs

Smartphones will remain the decisive application for small-size DDIs. As handset brands continue prioritizing flagship models while scaling back procurement for mid-range and entry-level devices, demand for OLED display driver ICs and more advanced OLED touch and display driver integration (TDDI) solutions is expected to remain relatively resilient. Growing adoption of foldable smartphones should provide additional support for OLED TDDI demand.

Conventional LCD TDDI products are expected to face greater pressure. The segment also benefited from a wave of pull-in orders during the first half of 2026, making second-half demand more difficult to forecast. Future shipments will depend largely on actual end-market sales and inventory levels.

Diversification may cushion the slowdown

More broadly, an increasing number of DDI suppliers have begun expanding into non-DDI products, with some already seeing tangible results. Market observers believe companies with a more diversified product portfolio may be better positioned to sustain seasonal growth in the second half of 2026.

Even so, DDI suppliers emphasized that current demand weakness is primarily tied to uncertainty across the broader consumer electronics market. They expect demand for display driver ICs to recover more notably once the benefits of AI begin filtering into a wider range of end-user applications.
