The next generation of mobile connectivity, 5G, is moving out of its testing stage and will take off in 2019, according to MediaTek chairman MK Tsai.
Speaking at the Taiwan 5G Commercialization Summit held January 21 in Taipei, Tsai said that 2019 will be a critical year for the maturing of 5G standards, technologies and industries, and will be the starting year for 5G commercialization.
Tsai stressed that his company will adopt a "New Premium" strategy to embrace the 5G era, aiming to work out the most useful and best products boasting accessibility, affordability and availability for general consumers, so as to accomplish the goal of "Connecting the Next Billions" long pursued by MediaTek.
Tsai furthered that 5G's communication traits of large bandwidth, high transmission speed, multi-connections, and low latency, and the rapid development of AI technologies will combine to enable more and more extensive applications, which will again disrupt people's behavioral modes and business models, and even trigger social changes.
While constant AI technological advancements via deep learning are significantly driving demand for upgrades in data processing algorithms, IC design houses have become a crucial pusher for innovative chip applications. Through innovation and development of SoCs, Taiwan tech industry chains will have a good chance of playing a crucial role in promoting a new wave of digital transformation in the process of 5G and AI technological evolutions, according to Tsai.
