Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments rose 8% sequentially and 6% on year in the second quarter of 2020, according to SEMI.

Silicon wafer area shipments came to 3.152 billion square inches in the second quarter, up from 2.92 billion square inches in the prior quarter and the 2.983 billion square inches shipped during the the same period in 2019, SEMI disclosed.

"While the short-term outlook remains uncertain due to coronavirus and geopolitical challenges impacting the broader industry, global silicon wafer shipments accelerated in the second quarter," said Neil Weaver, chairman for SEMI SMG and VP of product development and applications engineering at Shin Etsu Handotai America. "The strong first half of 2020 trended slightly higher than the first half of 2019."
