Qualcomm MEMS Technologies (QMT) is expected to install equipment at its new Mirasol plant in Taiwan in October 2011, and start volume production at the beginning of 2012, according to industry sources.

The Department of Investment Services under Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) on Monday announced that Qualcomm will invest almost US$1 billion to build a plant to produce small- to medium-size Mirasol displays at the Longtan site of Hsinchu Science Park (HSP).

The sources said it is expected to be a 4.5G plant for making the MEMS displays chiefly for medium-size handheld Internet devices. Currently, QMT can mass produce Mirasol display up to 5.7-inch.
