Amtran profits rise in 1Q10

Press release, April 30

Taiwan-based LCD TV maker Amtran Technology has announced net profit of NT$374 million (US$11.94 million) for the first quarter of 2010, up from NT$255 million for the previous quarter.

Revenues for the quarter totaled NT$13.23 billion with a gross margin of 13.9%. Profit growth in the first quarter was mainly driven by its high-priced products and non-operating incomes, Amtran said. Amtran said its shipments dropped slightly sequentially in the first quarter due to short-term material and labor shortages. Shipments of flat-panel TVs in the first quarter were 740,000 units, and monitor shipments reached almost 80,000 units.

Shipments of 32-, 37- and 42-inch flat-panel TVs accounted for 77% of Amtran's total shipments in the first quarter. Shipment share of 47- and 55-inch models increased to 22% as the high-end LE-backlit and IP TV models were chiefly in these two screensize segments, the company explained.

For 2010, Amtran will seek to strengthen its relationships with upstream LED chipmakers and packagers to secure supply. Amtran will launch both direct-type and edge-type LED-backlit TVs in 2010 and aims to ship 1-2 million LED-backlit TVs in 2010. In terms of IP TV, Amtran will continue to invest in R&D and launch new products to meet market demand, it said.

Amtran will continue to expand its business in the North America market, as well as emerging markets such as China, the company said.
