Taiwan-based IC distributor Aeco Technology will begin to supply USB 3.0 chips developed by US-based LucidPort Technology and manufactured at Japan-based NEC's fabs in October 2009, according to Aeco. USB 3.0 chips are expected to be initially used mainly in external hard disk drives, the company pointed out.

Aeco expects USB 3.0 products to start bringing in revenue contributions in 2010, and sales will become more substantial in the middle of the year as more companies adopt the interface.

Motherboard makers Asustek Computer, Micro-Star International (MSI) and Gigabyte Technology all plan to provide high-end products with built-in NEC USB 3.0 chips in 2010, according to market sources. In addition, USB 3.0 is expected to be integrated into Intel's southbridge chips in 2011, added the sources.
