With China's 12th Five-Year Plan placing strong emphasis on green energy, biotechnology and new light sources, the city of Nanjing will likely further increase procurement from Taiwan, said Ji Janye, the mayor of Nanjing, during his visit to the Lite-On Group headquarters on February 20.
Nanjing's procurement from Taiwan in 2011 is expected to total US$800 million, according to Ji, but some industry observes believe the figure will actually be closer to US$1 billion.
Lite-On Technology CEO KC Terng indicated that the two parties talked about projects for the 12th Five-Year Plan but did not reveal specific details. Ji pointed out that he is impressed with Lite-On's experience in LED and green energy, particularly in new technology development.
The Jiangsu province is a very important investment location for Lite-On Group in China. Since 2010, the company has invested US$950 million in China, and Jiangsu accounted for about 25%. Lite-On Technology currently has nine factories and one development center in the province.
