In response to the questions that Compal Electronics appears to have made fewer efforts in cloud computing than fellow makers Quanta Computer and Inventec, Compal president Ray Chen on indicated that Compal has done more than has been said, and will cooperate with other members of the Compal-Kimpo Group, including Compal Communications and Arcadyan Technology, to develop cloud computing applications.
As for tablet PCs, Chen believes Compal's shipments will only reach a few hundred thousand units in 2010, but the company is aiming to ship three million units in 2011, gaining 30% of the global market share.
For 2010, the Compal-Kimpo Group is aiming to ship 50 million notebooks, six million LCD TVs and 15-20 million handsets, while the group's other products lines such as car electronics, multimedia players and networking equipment will all see significant shipment growth.
Although Compal's LCD TV shipments did not reach its originally forecast in the first quarter, shipments in the second quarter have already shown a significant recovery and the company also expects to land orders from new clients in June or July. As for LED TVs, Compal has already started shipments and expects the segment to account for 40% of the company's total TV shipments in the second half, Chen added.
Chen also expects to see some results from the company's car electronics business in the second half and is currently aggressive in forming partnerships with Japan- and US-based automobile makers.
As Compal Communication's major client Palm was recently acquired by Hewlett-Packard (HP), Chen expects the news should benefit Compal.
