Buoyed by demand from the smartphone and gaming console segments, global shipments of MEMS devices, especially gyroscopes, will grow substantially in 2010, according to Benedetto Vigna, vice president and general manager of STMicroelectronics.
STMicroelectronics has rolled out a total of 850 million units of gyroscopes and accelerometers, and expects accumulated shipments of MEMS parts to reach one billion units by year-end 2010, Vigna noted.
Furthermore, demand from the consumer electronics product sector will be the driving force for the future growth of MEMS gyroscopes, Vigna asserted.
Despite increasing shipments, prices of gyroscopes have remained stable as current demand for MEMS parts is being driven by the development of new MEMS applications, Vigna said.
