Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) saw the number of its mobile Internet-access subscribers increase to 3.0 million at the end of May 2013 and expects the number to steadily rise to 3.6 million by the end of the year, 100,000 in excess of its target of 3.5 million, according to the company.
There were 2.5 million mobile Internet-access subscribers at the end of 2012, with the user base growing by a monthly average of 100,000 subscribers during January-May 2013, CHT indicated.
CHT currently has 10.4 million mobile communication subscribers of which 3.31 million or 31.8% are 2G users, the company noted. In line with promoting mobile access to the Internet, CHT aims to have 500,000 2G subscribers shift to 3G by the end of 2013, the company pointed out.
CHT will beef up marketing contract-bundled sale of tablets in the second half of 2013 and will upwardly adjust 2013 tablet sales target from 200,000 units originally to 250,000 units, the company said. All tablets to be sold by CHT will support both 3G and Wi-Fi, with 7-inch Android models to be the mainstream, the company pointed out. CHT expects 3G+Wi-Fi models and models only supporting Wi-Fi to take up 40% and 60% respectively of tablets to be sold in the Taiwan market in 2013.
