Power Quotient International (PQI) swung to profit in January 2009, but the memory-module maker suffered losses for the second straight year in 2008.
Thanks to rebounding prices for memory chips, PQI has posted a net profit of NT$51 million (US$1.48 million) or NT$0.22 per share for January. However, the company saw its net losses expand to NT$641 million in the fourth quarter of 2008, compared to a net loss of NT$282.76 million recorded in the first three quarters of the year.
Due to a steep decline in DRAM and NAND flash prices throughout last year, PQI experienced losses for the second straight year. The company reported a net loss of NT$924 million for 2008.
PQI is looking to enter the external hard drive sector this year, in an attempt to diversify its product offerings, according to company chairman Jance Lu. Currently, the ratio of the company's DRAM modules to NAND flash products is 3:7.
As for NAND flash products, PQI intends to focus its efforts on the solid-state drive (SSD) market. The company said in a recent report that it is mulling a plan to market co-branded products with Intel, and also cooperating with China's white-box netbook makers.
