Ahead of the new US trade sanctions against Huawei taking effect on September 15, Hannstar had geared up its handset panel shipments to the Chinese vendor, which helped boost Taiwan's small- to medium-size panel shipments by 11.9% sequentially in the third quarter.
Taiwan's large-size LCD panel shipments, after experiencing five straight quarters of on-year declines, grew 35% sequentially and 10.8% on year to come to 64.38 million in the second quarter of 2020.
Taiwan's small- to medium-size panels shipments went down 28.4% sequentially in the first quarter of 2020, reaching only 167.64 million units as demand for entry-level smartphones and feature phones decreased significantly.
Taiwan's large-size LCD panel shipments went down slightly on quarter, but more than 5% on year to arrive at 59.12 million units in the fourth quarter of 2019.
The fourth quarter of 2019 was a traditional slow season for the small- to medium-size panel industry, but Taiwan's shipments still grew 16.6% sequentially in the quarter thanks to strong short lead-time orders for feature phone panels and Huawei's aggressive demand for panels in a bid to achieve its annual shipment targets for the fiscal year.
