Thailand has become one of the leading automotive supply chain sectors and is experiencing an abundance of successful growth. This is especially projected through South Africa, which seeks to duplicate and apply Thailand's automotive supply chain model to its country.

A DIGITIMES Asia recent report, "2022 EV battery value-chain outlook in Asia," provides a comprehensive overview of the Thailand EV battery industry. Below is the summary of the report.

When it comes to unveiling the success secret of how Thailand transformed itself into a global export hub, Martin Schröder, a researcher from Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), concluded that "Thai policy, infrastructure, and industrial clusters" have contributed to this achievement.

Fast-forward to the EV era, DIGITIMES Asia believes that the Thai government has again adopted the same strategy. Since then, many foreign EV battery manufacturers were allured to the country and have set up their manufacturing plants in the country, namely Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Dräxlmaier/BMW, Daimler/Thonburi, Evlomo, and First One Mile Mobility (FOMM).

Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) said to DIGITIMES, "Under the Thailand 4.0 Industrial policy that aims to attract foreign investment to stimulate growth in Thailand's EV and semiconductor sector, Taiwanese companies are encouraged to invest and set up supply chains in the country."

However, it can be argued that the tradeoff of implementing EV policy limits the potential growth or development of local companies. The report titled, "2022 EV battery value chain outlook in Asia" reveals the current situation of Thailand's EV battery industry. In conclusion, the current EV policy should be revisited and enhanced to nurture the growth of the local EV battery industry as well as the need to create a collaborative culture among all stakeholders of the EV battery supply chain.
