Taiwan-based LCD TV maker Amtran Technology has declined to respond to recent rumors that Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) will merge with Amtran.
The rumors said that Foxconn chairman Terry Guo recently visited Amtran, Vizio's major LCD TV supplier. The rumors indicated that by taking over Amtran, Foxconn can increase its LCD TV OEM shipments and enhance its R&D for LCD TV.
But some industry observers noted that the chance of such a merger is slim as Foxconn acquired Sony's LCD TV plant in Mexico less than a year ago.
The observers said meetings between the two companies are only normal business activities.
Foxconn expects to ship up to 12 million LCD TVs in 2010, with over five million units for Sony, around three million 40-inch sets for Samsung Electronics, about two million for LG Electronics and 1-2 million for Vizio, the sources added.
