Lam Research announced a plan to include India-based suppliers in the global semiconductor equipment ecosystem, the second move by the company in less than a month to develop a chipmaking ecosystem in India.

According to Business Standard and India New England News, on March 8, Lam Research announced it is exploring India-based suppliers who can collaborate to fulfill the need for precision components, custom parts, high-purity gas delivery systems, and other assemblies that go into cutting-edge semiconductor wafer fabrication equipment.

Rangesh Raghavan, corporate vice president and general manager at Lam Research India, stated, by strengthening Lam's robust global supply infrastructure through partnerships with local suppliers, integrators, and strategic providers, we aim to boost the flexibility of our supply chain and bolster the semiconductor ecosystem in India.

Karthik Rammohan, the group vice president and head of global operations at Lam Research, said that by utilizing the infrastructure and talent at its India Centre of Engineering, the company aims to foster supply chain growth in India.

The announcement followed a three-way MoU signed by Lam Research, the India Semiconductor Mission, and the Indian Institute of Science in mid-April to facilitate the widespread adoption of Semiverse Solutions, which helps to train Indian engineers in the chipmaking industry, in addition to software licenses worth INR2.4 billion (US$29 million) over the next two years.

In July 2023, when Semicon India was held, Lam Research forged a partnership with the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Together, they will collaborate on developing courses tailored for Indian universities to educate students on semiconductor fabrication technology.

Lam Research's expanded partnerships in India were part of a series of collaborations, including strengthening semiconductor supply chains.
