New Android-based smartphones rolled out for 2019 will have some core components upgraded, particularly the upgrade to 10GB or more RAM in flagship devices, according to industry sources.

The sources believe that 10GB RAM will be the mainstream spec for flagship smartphones released by the Android camp this year, with several players promoting their flagship models with more than 10GB of RAM.

Specification upgrades will remain a strategy for smartphone companies this year, the sources indicated. Nevertheless, mobile DRAM demand is unlikely to see a substantial rise until the second half of 2020, the sources said. The sources continued that smartphone replacement demand will remain sluggish prior to the commercialization of 5G phones.

Companies including Xiaomi, ZTE and Vivo have unveiled their new models that come with 10GB of RAM, while Lenovo has introduced the industry's first 12GB smartphone.

Smartphone vendors have started promoting feature upgrades in their devices as a way to create product differentiation, Nanya Technology president Lee Pei-ing commented recently. Those upgrades, such as the addition of artificial intelligence (AI) and multiple lenses, will also require a upgrade on memory. Lee expressed optimism about mobile DRAM demand for high-end Android smartphones this year, when the models will come with 10-12GB of RAM. Demand will be stimulated further in 2020 when more 5G phones are commercially available, according to Lee.
