Intel's Global Ecosystem Development (GED) division is set to establish an operating center in Taiwan, assisting Taiwan-based IT players to research and develop new PC and mobile devices and enhance their R&D abilities. Although Intel refused to provide any further details about the plan, the company pointed out that it has already started forming tight partnerships with Taiwan players.
As for its R&D subjects in Taiwan, Intel is targeting 10 major technology fields including hardware, BIOS, thermal testing, wireless networking, graphics, battery improvements, and user interfaces for motion sensing, touchscreens and voice controls. In addition to cooperating with the existing PC supply chain, Intel will also work on befriending and nurturing IT firms with technologies, talent and capacities.
Sources from PC players revealed that technologies such as motion sensing, voice and touchscreen controls and cloud computing are the main subjects that Intel's GED division will focus on. In addition to providing assistance with R&D, the division will also need to ensure the supply chain to has efficient production and stable supply.
Intel's GED division has already partnered with touchscreen IC designers EETI and FocalTech and cloud computing server remote management chip designer Aspeed Technology, and signed supply contracts with them for stable supplies and prices.
