Broadcom Corp has announced that its continued collaboration with RaisingSun Digital Video Technology Co of Shanghai, China, has produced a next-generation 'all-in-one' digital television (DTV) turnkey solution that supports all Chinese broadcasting standards, including AVS, as well as Internet connectivity.

Due to the current global economic environment, customers across each of Broadcom's targeted end markets have requested adjustments in their deliveries for the fourth quarter, resulting in significant pushouts and cancellations since the company originally provided guidance for the quarter in October 2008.

...Broadcom is aggressively expanding into the cell phone market where it competes with other players such as Qualcomm. But analyst Betsy Van Hees of Caris & Co. also pointed to broader industry concerns, saying, "...we think Broadcom will experience a challenging near-term macro environment impacting earnings and revenue growth."

Last year, the ITC ruled that certain new models of 3G wireless handsets with Qualcomm chipsets could not be imported because they infringed on a Broadcom patent. An appellate court stayed the ban in September, pending appeal. On Tuesday, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld the ITC's ruling about the patent's validity. However, it reversed the import ban because Broadcom filed a complaint only against Qualcomm. The ITC could not ban products made by "downstream manufacturers."

Broadcom claims Qualcomm has double-dipped on its patents by charging a fee for the use of its technology and another fee for its use in combination with another product. It's a practice that is referred to as patent exhaustion. The lawsuit "further asserts that these practices constitute patent misuse that has brought Qualcomm a financial windfall and brought harm to the industry and consumers," Broadcom said in a statement. In addition to licensing its technology, Qualcomm also makes chips for phones using the same IP.

As it did in Round One, Broadcom has prevailed in Round Two of a GPS patent dispute with SiRF Technology, as a US ITC (International Trade Commission) judge Friday ruled that SiRF products infringe six patents belonging to Global Locate, a wholly owned Broadcom subsidiary.

The Justice Department has recommended a sentence of five years of probation and to require Samueli to pay more than US$12 million in penalties, according to the plea agreement.
