Micron Technology announced to invest in engineering and operation centers in Mexico on May 10 that it will hire at least 100 workers by the end of 2024.

Micron's new engineering and operations center will be located in Guadalajara, the capital of the Mexican state of Jalisco. It is expected to help foster the local technology ecosystem and provide opportunities for collaboration with local universities and colleges to train the next generation of engineering and technology professionals, according to Mexico News Daily, Mexico Now, and other media reports.

The US and Mexico have just announced the Grow and Diversify the Global Semiconductor Ecosystem Initiative six weeks ago. The US-Mexico Semiconductor Initiative is designed to solidify the development and manufacturing of semiconductor technologies on both sides of the border.

The US Department of Commerce has announced $6.14 billion in subsidies for Micron, and the new facility will also be Micron's first headquarters in Latin America.

Thanks to the advantages of multiple international trade agreements between the US and Mexico, Mexico is seen as a strategic geographic location for the North American market, especially as the US government seeks to reduce its reliance on chips from China and Taiwan.

Scott DeBoer, Micron's executive vice president of technology and products, praised Mexico's experience in the semiconductor sector. DeBoer cited Intel's design center in Mexico as an example of a country with a strong business ecosystem spanning the technology and semiconductor industries, as well as an excellent talent pool.
