CIGS thin-film solar products get more attention

Nuying Huang, Taipei

The price drop of mainstream polysilicon solar modules has put thin-film solar module firms in turmoil. Some industry observers believe for solar firms to grow, they need to find a niche market like First Solar with thin-film solar products.

According to China's news media, the recent cadmium spill incident in Guangxi has put the production of CdTe thin-film solar module (such as First Solar's) into question. Nevertheless, the solar industry has not yet given up hopes for the thin-film technology.

South Korea-based firm Samsung SDI decided to adjust its resources to thin-film solar products in 2011. Industry sources noted that Samsung SDI will focus on CIGS thin-film solar products.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been investing in the development of CIGS thin-film solar products. In the future, Samsung SDI and TSMC are very likely to be competitors in the CIGS thin-film solar market.
