The Bureau of Energy under Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has formed a task force to draw up a plan to promote the development of smart (electricity) grids around Taiwan, with the plan to be tendered in 2010, according to the agency.

The MOEA has commissioned the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Institute for Information Industry (III) to develop hardware and software, respectively, for use in smart grids, the agency pointed out. In addition, state-run Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) and Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) have begun specifying standards for integration of power generation/distribution with communication under the auspices of the MOEA, the agency indicated.

Taiwan may become the world's third country to promote smart grids, next to Italy and the US, the agency noted.
