and the prices are quite challenging I say...

Four cores are great if you are doing DVD encoding or Photoshop etc..
Also multitasking you can have 4 different processor intensive programs running, 1 on each core and not have to worry about crashing or bogging down.

"Once everyone is on to two cores in a year or two, then we start talking about four cores."

No, immediately - if you want to upgrade now and be relatively future proof for a while.

If you have to ask then you obviously don't need four cores. As far as games go probably not too many are multi-core ready, but for applications, there are quite a few that are now.

I agree, atm there are only a handful of applications that benefit from multiple cores and unless you work intensely with those specific programs, the additional cost doesn't seem justified.

The power drain will dim the lights and dent your paycheck when your electric bill arrives

What's the big deal about quad-core? How many of the games you play or apps you use actually know what to do with two-cores right now? It's all marketing. Once everyone is on to two cores in a year or two, then we start talking about four cores.

Wow, maybe I'll buy one of these. It's been a while and it's time for an upgrade :-)
