Taiwan's Office of Trade Negotiations under the Executive Yuan said on January 13 that the core objectives of ongoing tariff talks with the US have been to secure reductions in reciprocal tariffs without stacking, and to obtain preferential treatment under Section 232 for semiconductors, semiconductor-derived products, and other covered items.

The two sides have reached a broad consensus on key issues and are now discussing the schedule for a final wrap-up meeting. Once confirmed, the timeline will be announced publicly.

The office said that following the fifth in-person round of Taiwan-US talks, negotiations with the US Department of Commerce have continued via video conferences and written exchanges under a "Taiwan model" framework for supply-chain cooperation. Taiwan has also requested US support in areas such as land access, utilities, visa facilitation, and streamlined administrative procedures to create a more favourable investment environment for Taiwanese companies.

In parallel, Taiwan has maintained document exchanges with the Office of the US Trade Representative on the content of a future Taiwan-US trade agreement, with a certain level of consensus already in place.

The Office of Trade Negotiations added that after the wrap-up meeting, both sides will announce the main elements of the agreement. The government will also provide full briefings to the legislature and the public, and submit the complete agreement text and impact assessment to parliament for review in accordance with legal procedures.
