Taiwan's power components makers are teaming up with IC design houses or large business groups to develop complementary products and share resources, sales channels and supply chains, so as to tap deeper into the sector of compound semiconductors for automotive applications, according to supply chain sources.
Veteran automotive diode vendor Actron Technology, a part of Sino-American Silicon Products (SAS), has become the largest shareholder of Excelliance MOS, an Asustek subsidiary dedicated to supplying power MOSFET chips, and the team-up will help integrate their developments of mainstream silicon-based MOSFET and IGBT chip solutions, in addition to new SiC power devices, the sources said.
MOSFET and SiC diode supplier Panjit International has also joined forces with power management IC (PMIC) designer Champion Microelectronic to develop total solutions integrating power devices and analog PMICs
Eris Technology, a diode subsidiary of US-based Diodes Group, will scale down its diode supply to only 30-40% or lower in terms of revenue ratio, and convert a major portion of its capacity to support backend package of Si- and SiC-based MOSFET power modules from DiodSent Green, a joint venture between Diodes and Taiwan's Sentec Group, starting in 2024.
MOSFET and IGBT supplier Advanced Power Electronics has joined Foxconn-initiated MIH platform to promote its SiC MOSFETs, which reportedly will also rely on Eris Tech for backend processing.
Compound semiconductors SiC and GaN are a new blue-ocean market that Taiwanese power devices makers and related supply chain players are eager to tap into, the sources said. But they have to find close partners to jointly seek sales channels and develop clients, in addition to securing the supply of foundry capacity and raw materials like substrates, if they want to break the dominance of the market by international IDMs, the sources stressed.
