The concept of Metaverse is fundamentally that of immersion in various application scenarios and therefore, integration of virtuality with reality and immersion-based applications can be generically called "Metaverse," according to Paul Peng, Chairman of TFT-LCD panel maker AU Optronics (AUO).

AUO and fellow maker Innolux have offered many Metaverse-related products, Peng said. For example, AUO and its subsidiary Space4M have cooperated to set up an LED digital virtual studio, the largest one in Taiwan, at Shih Hsin University in Taipei City, northern Taiwan, Peng noted.

Occupying floor space of about 1,550 square meters, the studio is mainly a 270-degree ring-shaped screen wall in width of 15 meters and height of six meters plus a canopy. The screen wall, composed of a seamless mosaic of 2,200 vivid LED display panels, each with a refresh rate of 6,000Hz, can create 3D simulations and the visual effect of being personally in a scene.

While conventional post-production of special visual effects takes considerable time, an LED digital virtual studio can simultaneously display visual effects during film shooting to greatly reduce post-production workloads. In addition, immersive simulation heightens the immersiveness of visualization and thus enables creators to make better creations. Life-like scenes depicted by the LED digital virtual system make actors and actresses perform more intuitively and naturally.

Unlike green-screen studios which completely rely on post-production, Space4M uses hardware-software integration to combine fine LED display technology with real-time image tracking technology provided by Hollywood-based teams, thus enabling collaboration among all systems concerned, driving development of a brand-new film-making process.

Innolux has unveiled multi-user N3D (natural 3D) display technology. Metaverse products expedite development of immersive visual experiences and 3D displays offering the best connection between virtuality and reality. Whereas previous VR solutions often required uncomfortable goggles and caused dizziness, new Metaverse displays resemble reality and let many users wander around virtual and real scenarios without goggles and dizziness. The technology can be used in 3D immersive gaming environments as well as merchandise advertising at retail stores.
