India EMS firm Dixon reportedly to make Acer notebooks

India's EMS firm Dixon Technologies has reached an agreement with Taiwan-based PC maker Acer to produce 500,000 notebooks every year in India, Business Standard has cited sources as saying.

The company is eligible to receive government subsidies under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for manufacturing handsets, IT hardware, and telecom devices.

According to Business Standard, executive director at Dixon Technologies Sunil Vachani said they have proposed setting up a joint venture with telecom operator Bharti Group to manufacture telecom and network devices in Ludhianaa. He said Dixon plans to invest INR2 billion (US$26.6 million) in projects eligible to PLI subsidies in the telecom/network sector.

According to CNBCTV18, Dixon is building its 13th factory in Noida which is scheduled to start production later in 2021 and could produce up to 500,000 notebooks and 2.5 million tablets every year.

As for handset, Dixon reportedly has started making a 5G mmWave smartphone for American brand Orbic, according to Economic Times. The media outlet cited Orbic CEO Mike Narula as saying that they will outsource more products to Dixon, including wearables, notebooks, and Chromebooks that will be exported to the US, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
