The year 2020 is a milestone in use of green energy by Taiwan's high-tech industries, according to SEMI Taiwan president and SEMI chief marketing officer Terry Tsao.
TSMC earlier in 2020 signed a long-term contract for wind power purchases.
The coronavirus pandemic has heightened global awareness of environmental protection, the importance of RE100 (committed to 100% renewable energy), and carbon taxes imposed by many European countries, Tsao said.
Major RE100 participants, including Apple, Google, Facebook and Dell, are relying on different ways to increase use of green energy, Tsao noted.
Taiwan's important position in global semiconductor production has attracted international equipment and material suppliers who are directly under pressure of using green energy from major RE100 participants, Tsao indicated, adding Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain has stepped up efforts for environmental protection, energy savings, and green energy use for years, Tsao added.
Since international enterprises have included use of green energy as a percentage of total power demand among essential evaluation factors in seeking partners, green energy in Taiwan has to keep up with growth in Taiwan's high-tech manufacturing industries, Tsao noted.
