Intel is working with chipmaker Broadcom to enhance the HD decoding capabilities in its next-generation netbook platform (Pine Trail), according to sources at notebook makers.
Intel plans to offer Broadcom's BCM70015 graphics chip as an option to improve video performance on Pine Trail platform devices. The chip has a die size of 10×10mm and consumes 30mW at idle. When playing 720p content, power consumption of the chip is lower than 500mW, and it consumes less than 1W while playing 1080p content.
The chip supports AVC, H.264, VC-1, WMV9 and MPEG2 standards and will support Windows XP, Windows 7 and Linux.
Intel will offer Broadcom's BCM70015 chip as an option to its partners along with Pine Trail in the fourth quarter, the sources noted.
