Taiwan's Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has imposed a fine of NT$1.2 million (US$39,484) upon Acer after finding the company likely misled consumers in Taiwan with advertisements for its Aspire notebooks.
The issue relates to advertising claims that all Acer Aspire notebooks included Dolby Digital technology despite the fact that models manufactured before June 2007 did not. The FTC concluded that this discrepancy would have misled consumers and so levied the fine while also ruling the vendor must correct the mistake.
Acer argued that the product picture and accompanying advertising copy provided enough information to allow consumers to differentiate between new models that include Dolby technology and previous models which do not. The company said it will continue to negotiate with the FTC for an administrative remedy.
