Taiwan 3G operator Vibo to cut subscriber target again

Vibo Telecom, one of the five operators of 3G mobile communication services in Taiwan, plans to lower its subscriber target level for this year for the second time, with a new target to be determined latter, according to company general manager David Wang at a press conference on August 29.

Vibo reduced its subscriber target from one million subscribers originally to 750,000 at the end of May, Wang indicated. When Aurora Telecom, the first MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) in Taiwan and in which Vibo is a 40%-stake shareholder, started operations in late June of this year, Vibo adjusted its user base goal to 900,000 subscribers, Wang noted. With the current number of subscribers at a little more than 300,000, Vibo is considering again reducing its target volume, Wang pointed out.

Although Vibo has not yet released its financial report, the company suffered a net loss of NT$2.55-2.60 billion for the first half of this year, according to local industry sources. In order to diminish operating losses, Vibo has decided to adjust its operational strategy by emphasizing average revenue contribution per user instead of fast growth in the number of subscribers, Wang indicated.

Vibo also announced a three-year strategic alliance with US-based Convergys for management of its customer services and accounts.
