Corning launches Eagle XG Slim LCD glass substrates
Corning announced the commercialization of its Eagle XG Slim, a new line of thin glass substrates, at Display Taiwan 2010 in Taipei on June 9. While the initial focus is on enabling lighter-weight portable devices, with glass sizes up to 5G at 0.4mm thick, Corning will add more sizes and thicknesses to the line to support larger applications like LCD TV."As the first to supply commercial volumes of 0.5mm glass and now 0.4mm glass, Corning is pleased to apply its technology leadership to help enable the industry's continued advancement," said James P Clappin, president, Corning Display Technologies. "Eagle XG Slim glass will allow device makers to reduce costs and provide a greener product while creating the sleek, multifunctional devices consumers desire."Currently, most panel makers begin with 0.5mm thick substrates for portable devices, and then employ a costly thinning process that uses chemicals to reduce the thickness of the glass. Corning's proprietary fusion process forms thin glass of pristine surface quality, ready to use as-formed. Thin input glass requires no additional panel thinning to achieve weight and thickness targets. Benefits include a lower total cost, a simplified supply chain, and reduced energy consumption.Additionally, the new substrates will leverage the Eagle XG composition, the environmentally friendly glass substrate, making devices even more recyclable.Corning will produce Eagle XG Slim at its plants in Asia, utilizing its worldwide supply chain. Samsung Corning Precision Materials will also supply the product line to customers in Korea.Moving forward, Corning plans to develop 0.3mm substrates for glass sizes that support portable electronic devices and to broaden the line to include gen sizes that support TVs and other large displays.

Display Taiwan 2010: AUO exhibits full lineup of display applications
AU Optronics (AUO) is taking part in Display Taiwan 2010 at Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1 from June 9-11 to showcase its full lineup of display products. The exhibits include 3D display technologies with panels ranging from 8- to 65-inch, the range of 46- to 65-inch power-saving LED-backlit TV panels, LED-backlit IT (notebook and LCD monitor) displays from 10.1- to 24-inch employing multi-touch or MVA technologies, and small to medium-size e-paper display applications, in addition to advanced TV display technologies such as the 58-inch CinemaScope HDTV and AMVA5.AUO is also showing what it calls the world's largest 32-inch projected capacitive multi-touch LCD display and the world's first 2.4-inch transparent AMOLED in-cell touch panel. The exhibition area is divided into sections including 3D displays, advanced technologies for TVs, LED-backlit TVs, IT and general displays, mobile display technologies, AMOLED and e-paper.3D displayAUO is exhibiting a series of 3D display technologies, including glasses-free barrier and lenticular lens types, and pattern retarder 3D panels to be viewed with special glasses, with panels ranging from 8 to 65 inches.Of the exhibits, the 65-inch pattern retarder full HD 3D panel is the largest commercialized 3D TV panel available, the company said. All it takes is for the audience to put on a pair of polarized 3D glasses, weighing only 10 grams, and 3D images with high quality and brightness could be easily captured. The 3D displays come with LED backlights, making the panels even slimmer and more power-saving. The fact that these large panels do not take up much space makes them the most ideal green choices in home theaters. In addition, the 65-inch full HD lenticular lens 3D panel, with high brightness at 650 nits and eight viewpoints, allows the audience to enjoy 3D experiences without 3D glasses.Advanced TV display technologyAUO is showcasing the world's largest 32-inch projected capacitive multi-touch panel capable of recognizing 10 touch points simultaneously. Back in the days of single touch point applications, it was easy to locate the only touch point on the panel. However with the development of multiple touch points, sometimes ghost points are falsely registered during the detection process. AUO claims its 32-inch projected capacitive multi-touch panel has successfully attained zero ghost point, demonstrating the real convenience of using multi-touch panels. In the same section, the 58-inch CinemaScope LED HDTV is being displayed with an ultra-wide resolution of 2560x1080. Films of the 21:9 aspect ratio could be played without black bars on the top and bottom. Also, with its 120Hz double frame rate, motion blurs that characteristically troubled passive lighting displays are effectively reduced. In addition, the 55-inch full HD panel employing the latest AMVA5 technology with ultra-wide viewing angle is also on display. AUO has worked to increase cell transmittance to enhance power efficiency. The color washout problem commonly found within traditional MVA technology has also been resolved with AUO's proprietary development in pixel control and LCD driver, the company said. The intrinsic static contrast ratio has been raised to 16,000:1; light leakage is reduced, with enhanced image sharpness at dark state.Power-saving LED-backlit LCD TV panelsThe trend toward eco-friendly, slimmer and power-saving TVs has set AUO to apply innovative green technologies to large-size panels. In this year's show, AUO is exhibiting panels ranging from 46- to 65-inch, among which the 46-inch full HD LCD panel with 10.8mm edge-type LED backlight weighs merely 10.5 kg. The complete series of ultra slim LED-backlit LCD TV panels are light, slim, of high contrast ratio and power-saving, allowing large-sized TVs to remain eco-friendly, trendy and light at the same time.E-paperAUO has been an active player in the e-paper market and this time the full range of e-paper products using SiPix Microcup technology is also on display, including the 2-inch electronic shelf label (ESL), 4.3-inch e-book, and 6- and 9- built-in touch e-books. In addition, 20-inch e-paper display module for e-signage, 6-inch foldable e-book module and 6-inch flexible e-paper module are also to be seen at the show.Fruits of AMOLED development have also made their appearances, including what AUO calls the world's first 2.4-inch transparent AMOLED in-cell touch panel, featuring the leading technology that combines transparent panel with in-cell multi-touch function. It will be the best medium for GPS applications, AUO said.
