IFA 2017: LG OLED TVs
LG Electronics is demonstrating at IFA 2017 in Berlin its OLED TVs featuring Technicolor Expert Mode, which will be available in the picture setting menu to all of LG's 2017 OLED TVs starting in October, according to the vendor. LG is also working on adopting Technicolor Expert Mode for its 2017 Super UHD TVs. LG's OLED TVs are used by Technicolor as consumer reference displays in the production of home delivery versions of major Hollywood movies and television content such as Logan and Sense 8, according to LG. At IFA 2017, LG is showcasing its 4K HDR video game rendering capabilities of its OLED TVs expanded color performance in combination with Microsoft's Xbox One S and Turn 10's Forza Horizon 3. With HDR, the glint of the sun off the racing cars is complimented by the pixel diming nature of OLED. This allows the light to be bright even against a dark car with no discoloration, according to the vendor. Gamers will benefit from an input lag time of no more than 21.3ms. All 2017 LG OLED and Supe UHD TVs feature active HDR which delivers brighter highlights and greater shadow details when displaying HDR content. Active HDR allows LG TVs to process the picture scene by scene, generating dynamic data from each scene in the video, which is then used to optimize the rendered picture on a scene by scene basis. In addition, 2017 LG OLED TVs and Super UHD TVs support multiple HDR formats including Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) broadcast technology, with all 2017 LG UHD TV models supporting the HLG format.

IFA 2017: Huawei Kirin 970
Huawei has launched the Kirin 970 at IFA 2017 in Berlin, a chip that combines the power of the cloud with the speed and responsiveness of native AI processing, according to the company. Cloud AI has seen broad application, but user experience still has room for improvement, including latency, stability, and privacy, according to the vendor. Cloud AI and on-device AI can complement each other. On-device AI offers strong sensing capabilities, which are the foundation of understanding and assisting people. Sensors produce a large amount of real-time, scenario-specific, and personalized data. Supported by strong chip processing capabilities, devices will become more cognitive of user needs, providing personalized and readily accessible services. Kirin 970 is powered by an 8-core CPU and a new generation 12-core GPU. Built using a 10nm advanced process, the chipset packs 5.5 billion transistors into an area of only one square centimeter. Huawei's new flagship Kirin 970 is its first mobile AI computing platform featuring a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU). Compared to a quad-core Cortex-A73 CPU cluster, the Kirin 970's new heterogeneous computing architecture delivers up to 25x the performance with 50x greater efficiency. The Kirin 970 can perform the same AI computing tasks faster and with far less power, Huawei claims. In a benchmark image recognition test, the Kirin 970 processed 2,000 images per minute, which was faster than other chips on the market. Huawei is positioning the Kirin 970 as an open platform for mobile AI, opening up the chipset to developers and partners.

IFA 2017: Lenovo Star Wars AR headset
Lenovo and Disney have jointly unveiled Star Wars: Jedi Challenges, a new augmented reality Star Wars product. Jedi Challenges features a smartphone-powered Lenovo Mirage AR headset, Tracking Beacon, and Lightsaber controller. The product is compatible with both Android phones and iPhones, according to the vendor. Players will hone their Jedi talents across a variety of augmented reality-based experiences, each offering multiple levels of deep and immersive gameplay, according to Lenovo. To guide the player on this journey, Jedi Challenges will introduce an all-new Star Wars character, the Archivist. The Archivist instructs players in the ways of the Force and the knowledge of the Jedi. Throughout these challenges, users will train to perfect their lightsaber skills by taking on some of the most menacing villains the dark side has to offer, command armies in combat missions to defeat the Empire, and outwit their opponents in Holochess, all in augmented reality. Users start by downloading the Star Wars: Jedi Challenges app onto their compatible phone and sliding the phone into the tray of the Lenovo Mirage AR headset, which will provide full gaming immersion. The headset also comes with a Tracking Beacon, which is placed on the floor and acts as a stable base for the headset's sensors to detect the user' movement during gameplay. Equipped with two built-in fisheye sensors to provide inside-out positional tracking, the headset allows for free and natural motion for the player to move around. The headset pairs with a Lightsaber controller, modeled after the one wielded by Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, and Rey. Designed to be a key part of the experience, the Lightsaber acts as a controller and pointer, allowing players to navigate the user interface, with all controls, actions and commands activated with a simple two-button configuration.
