China stepped up its semiconductor development at the turn of the century. The current output value of China's semiconductor industry is US$66.1 billion, accounting for 7% of the global total in 2021. China is still outside of top four in the global semiconductor race, but it has a “wild card” in the form of its enormous home market and the Chinese government’s ambitions enabling its competition in the global race.

Major companies:
  1. Will Semiconductor (IC design)
  2. SMIC (Foundry)
South Korea excels in memory industry with output value of US$105 billion plus US$20.1 billion from wafer foundry in 2021. Both sectors contributed a total of $125.1 billion, representing 95% of the output of the entire Korean semiconductor industry. The county’s entire semiconductor industry had an output value of US$131.8 billion, accounting for 15% of the global supply chain.

Major companies:
  1. Samsung (IDMs)
  2. SK Hynix (Memory)
Renesas, Kioxia, Rohm and IC design house Socionext from Japan reported total revenue of US$36.7 billion, accounting for a moderate 6.6% of the global market in 2021. Japan is quite advanced in the materials, equipment and image processing technologies. Sony and Denso are TSMC's primary partners in the investment project in Kumamoto.

Major companies:
  1. Renesas (IDMs)
  2. Rohm (IDMs)
  3. Kioxia (Memory)
  4. Socionext (IC design)
Taiwanese firms are well known for its wafer foundry and IC design industry sectors, it generated revenue of US$44.8 billion from IC design and IP sectors with about 24% of the global market share in 2021, while the revenue of wafer foundry reached US$71 billion, accounting for 67% of the global total.

Major companies:
  1. TSMC (Foundry)
  2. UMC (Foundry)
  3. MediaTek (IC design)
  4. Novatek (IC design)
  5. Realtek (IC design)
Led by STMicroelectronics, NXP, and Infineon, European manufacturers represent 8.5% of the global market share in 2021. Automotive chips will be the strategic products for all automotive players to cash in on future business opportunities. European manufacturers have undertaken relatively less capacity expansion in the past few years.

Major companies:
  1. Infineon (IDMs)
  2. NXP (IDMs)
  3. STMicroelectronics (IDMs)
The US IDMs and IC design houses create US$273.9 billion in market value and account for 49.3% of market share in 2021. In addition, the US-based equipment providers and suppliers of IP and design tools account for 40.4% of the global industry output of US$359.8 billion.

The secrets to sucess in the semiconductor industry

China’s IC design industry has remained active in recent years, with the number of related companies continuing to rise. The statistics from the ICCAD showed the number of IC design companies in China reached 2,810 in 2021, compared to 2,218 in 2020, a 26.7% increase. It is worth noting there were only 1,780 local IC design companies in 2019, showing significant growth in the last two years.

In terms of size, 413 IC design companies were expected to see sales exceed CNY100 million in 2021, compared to 289 companies in 2020, for an increase of 42.9%. Sales for these 413 companies amounted to CNY328.8 billion in 2021, up from CNY305 billion the year before, accounting for 71.7% of overall industry sales.

Chinese IC design companies currently cover consumer electronics, telecommunications, computer, simulation, power, and smart card applications. Consumer electronics and telecom are the two leading revenue segments for Chinese IC design companies, with sales amounting to CNY206.6 billion and CNY103 billion, respectively, in 2021.

In the future, the semiconductor industry growth will rely more on chips for electric vehicles (EV), 5G mobile phones, the Internet of Things (IoT), and AI. There is a huge demand in China's IC application market and electronic machine industry, pushing the rapid growth of China's IC design industry.

In this paper, DIGITIMES Asia will address the development of China's top 10 publicly listed IC design companies, and outline their road to success. DIGITIMES Asia selected the 10 companies based on their sales revenue, the net profit margin in 2020, and company revenue per employee.

Report highlights:
