Lam Research plans to invest INR100 billion (approx. US$1.04 billion) in India over the next several years, adding its first silicon component manufacturing facility in the country and expanding its advanced research and development operations.

Announced ahead of SEMICON India 2026, the investment will expand Lam's presence across manufacturing and R&D as the semiconductor equipment supplier increases its role in India's developing semiconductor ecosystem.

The planned manufacturing facility will support a vertically integrated process spanning silicon ingot production and processing for advanced semiconductor technologies and leading-edge nodes, according to the company.

Lam did not disclose the planned facility's location, its production capacity, or a specific timeline for commencing operations.

The investment will also augment Lam's R&D operations in India. The company's India Center for Engineering already supports its global operations in areas including design, testing, validation, and next-generation technology development.

"India represents an important part of Lam's global innovation and growth strategy," said Rangesh Raghavan, corporate vice president and managing director of Lam Research India.

"Our continuing expansion in India reflects our confidence in the country's talent, growing semiconductor ecosystem, and supportive policy environment," Raghavan said.

"We remain committed to collaborating with the government, academia, suppliers, start-ups and other stakeholders to help accelerate semiconductor innovation that benefits the industry globally."

Expanding manufacturing and supplier opportunities

Lam said the planned investment represents the next phase of its development in India, where it has operated for more than 25 years.

The company's existing presence includes a large engineering hub and a chip R&D laboratory. Lam has also incorporated India into its global supply chain and conducted semiconductor workforce development programs in the country.

The addition of silicon component manufacturing expands that footprint further into semiconductor manufacturing-related operations.

Lam said the new manufacturing facility and expanded R&D operations are expected to create opportunities for partnerships with local suppliers.

The company currently engages Indian companies for specialized materials, precision components, gases, chemicals, metrology, and manufacturing services used by the semiconductor industry.

Lam said the expansion is intended to support customers globally as semiconductor manufacturing becomes increasingly complex, particularly as AI drives demand for new semiconductor technologies.

Focus on semiconductor talent

The investment is also expected to create advanced engineering and high-technology manufacturing jobs and introduce additional specialized manufacturing capabilities in India.

Lam said the expansion is intended to strengthen the country's semiconductor talent base and contribute to the development of a globally competitive workforce. The plans build on Lam's existing workforce development initiatives in India.

The company has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science and the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to expand access to semiconductor manufacturing education through its Semiverse Solutions virtual platform.

The program has a goal of preparing up to 60,000 students in India between 2023 and 2033 for careers in the global semiconductor industry.

Lam has also launched the Lam Research Skill Development Program, aimed at helping aspiring workers develop industry-relevant skills and expand pathways into advanced manufacturing careers.

The company said its India expansion forms part of broader investments in manufacturing, supply chain capabilities, and advanced R&D as it seeks to accelerate development of next-generation semiconductor technologies.
