Qualcomm has reportedly notified customers that it will raise prices across its Snapdragon system-on-chip portfolio from September 2026, including its next flagship mobile platform due to launch that month. The largest increases could reach double-digit percentages, drawing attention to how Apple and MediaTek will respond.

Market sources said Qualcomm's decision was understandable and followed similar action by other chipmakers, but warned that higher component costs could weaken consumer electronics demand during the traditional peak season in the second half of 2026.

Qualcomm, Apple, and MediaTek are all scheduled to hold earnings calls this week, with pricing strategy expected to be a key focus.

The prospect of higher mobile SoC prices has been discussed for more than six months, driven mainly by two factors.

First, all three leading flagship mobile SoC suppliers are adopting 2nm technology in its first year of mass production in 2026, when wafer prices remain exceptionally high.

Second, demand for advanced-process capacity has surged as cloud providers expand AI chip production. With supply unable to keep pace, chip designers increasingly have little choice but to pay more to secure capacity.

Qualcomm has moved relatively late. Major integrated device manufacturers have already issued two or three price-increase notices this year, while Apple and MediaTek acted within the past one to two months.

Apple has raised prices across several end products, and market observers widely expect the iPhone 18 series to exceed the 2025 price range.

MediaTek has also formally notified customers of price increases to reflect rising costs. The company has not commented on whether it could follow overseas rivals with multiple increases this year, leaving investors to watch for any shift in its position during this week's earnings call.

Industry sources had previously expected weaker smartphone demand in 2026 to prompt Qualcomm and other mobile SoC suppliers to redirect some wafer allocations towards businesses including cloud AI chips.

Qualcomm's broad price increase suggests that even after adjusting wafer allocation, leading SoC suppliers still need higher prices to manage constrained supply.

Mobile peripheral-chip suppliers said price competition has long shaped the flagship SoC market. Apple, in particular, had used aggressive pricing in recent years to expand market share. With all major suppliers now raising prices, however, tight supply appears to have become an industry-wide reality, leaving little room for discount-led competition.

Views remain divided over the effect on end-market demand.

Some industry sources expect only limited disruption because most second-half launches will be flagship products, whose buyers tend to tolerate higher prices. Flagship-device sales also continued to grow during the traditionally weaker first half of 2026, even as demand for entry-level and mid-range products softened.

Others warn that the cost environment has deteriorated since the first half. Prices are rising not only for SoCs but also for memory and peripheral chips, increasing the likelihood of further device price increases.

Whether consumers will continue accepting those higher prices remains uncertain.
