India's smartwatch leader enters smartphone market despite surging memory cost

Fire-Boltt is expanding beyond wearables into smartphones, a move that could shape India's budget-device market and add another local contender to a segment dominated by Chinese brands. The launch may matter globally as rising component costs, local manufacturing, and ecosystem-building become central themes across emerging markets.

According to Fortune India, ChosunBiz, and the Economic Times, the Indian wearables company said it is entering the country's smartphone market with boltt, a new Made-in-India brand that will be sold through Flipkart and offline retail channels. It has committed an initial investment of more than US$50 million for product development, manufacturing, marketing, distribution, and ecosystem expansion, with more spending planned as demand grows.

Fire-Boltt plans to launch its first two smartphones, one 4G model and one 5G model, in the INR10,000-15,000 (approx. US$105-151) price band. The devices are expected to be unveiled in early August, with commercial sales beginning in mid-August ahead of the festive season. The company is targeting sales of 500,000 to 1 million units over the next four to five months.

The move comes as competition intensifies in India's affordable smartphone segment, where homegrown brands are trying to capitalize on demand for locally manufactured devices. Earlier this year, AI+ also entered the market with budget phones, while established players such as Xiaomi, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Realme continue to dominate.

Arnav Kishore, founder and chief executive of boltt, said the company sees a major opportunity for a homegrown smartphone brand that understands Indian consumers. He said Fire-Boltt has built one of India's largest connected consumer ecosystems over the years, and that smartphones are central to how people connect, create, learn, and aspire.

Mukund Kedia, senior director at Flipkart, said the e-commerce platform aims to make premium smartphone experiences more accessible across metros and non-metros. He said Flipkart's reach, combined with boltt's 4G and 5G portfolio, could offer devices that balance durability, performance, and innovation.

Fire-Boltt, which built its name in smartwatches and other wearables, is seeking to broaden its consumer technology footprint as demand in its core category slows. The company has previously said it will rely on its existing user base of more than 40 million consumers and its nationwide distribution network to support the launch.
