Huawei to launch AI SSD in Shanghai, aims to tackle HBM supply bottlenecks

Huawei will debut its self-developed artificial intelligence (AI) solid-state drive on August 27 at its Lianqiu Lake R&D Center. The company said the device is designed to address the escalating demands of training and inference for large AI models, promising advances in performance, capacity, and cost efficiency.

The product is also expected to reduce China's reliance on high-bandwidth memory (HBM), where supply remains limited. The launch marks the first major in-house innovation event held at the research hub, drawing wide industry attention.

China's AI ambitions strain memory supply

The rapid adoption of generative AI has magnified China's memory dilemma. As models expand in size, traditional computing architectures are hitting limits. High-performance AI accelerators equipped with HBM deliver speed but remain constrained by capacity and availability.

Standard SSDs provide storage scale but fall short on latency and throughput, leaving Chinese developers grappling with memory bottlenecks that curb AI training and inference efficiency. Huawei said its AI SSD is engineered to strike a balance between performance and capacity, leveraging proprietary architecture to boost data access and improve user experience.

Strategic play to ease HBM dependence

The AI SSD will be deployed primarily in data centers and will complement Huawei's Unified Cache Manager (UCM) technology, which was introduced earlier this year. The system dynamically manages data between HBM, DRAM, and SSDs based on usage, effectively extending HBM's usable capacity and allowing models to retain more key-value caches.

Industry experts say this could significantly enhance overall processing performance. With US export controls tightening on advanced memory and China's domestic HBM technology still lagging global competitors, local firms are in urgent need of substitutes. Huawei sees momentum in NAND and SSD advances from Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC), which have reached globally competitive levels, as a foundation for its AI storage ambitions.

Potential shift in global SSD market

Analysts note that Huawei's entry into high-end AI SSDs could redefine the role of SSDs beyond general-purpose storage, positioning them as a core element of AI computing infrastructure. If Huawei succeeds in commercializing the technology, it may weaken HBM's dominance in AI memory and open the market to more diverse competition. That shift could spur new partnerships between Huawei and other industry players, reshaping the ecosystem.

Peter Zhou, president of Huawei's IT product line, said in the invitation to the launch that current AI accelerators are struggling to keep up with the explosive growth in large model data needs, while traditional SSDs slow system response. He said the new product, presented under the theme "AI SSD: Accelerating the Intelligent Economy," is designed to overcome those limits and deliver high-performance storage for AI at scale.

The AI SSD follows Huawei's rollout of its CloudMatrix SuperNode technology and highlights a faster push into memory and storage infrastructure. The company says the move is meant to give China's AI ecosystem more independent options and to challenge global memory suppliers.

Industry analysts note the launch is not just another hardware release but could mark a turning point in the architecture of AI computing.
