OpenAI has partnered with the Indian government's IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to launch OpenAI Academy India, the first international rollout of its education platform, according to Mint, Business Today, and Business World.

Strategic partnership targets India's growing tech ecosystem

Announced on June 6, 2025, the initiative aims to democratize access to AI knowledge and tools, leveraging India's growing developer base, robust digital infrastructure, and vibrant startup ecosystem.

The launch was accompanied by a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between OpenAI and IndiaAI, outlining key areas of collaboration, including digital skilling, government training programs, and AI community development. OpenAI's CSO Jason Kwon highlighted India's rapid AI adoption, noting it as one of the most dynamic countries in the field and home to the second-largest base of ChatGPT users. "We're proud to help more people gain the confidence and skills to use AI meaningfully in their work, communities, and lives," Kwon said at the event.

Multi-language platform to reach diverse audiences

Under the MoU, OpenAI will share AI training content via the OpenAI Academy and the IndiaAI FutureSkills portal. Educational material will be available in English, Hindi, and four additional regional languages. The initiative includes capacity-building programs for government officials through the iGOT Karmayogi platform, alongside AI literacy programs targeting students, developers, teachers, civil servants, and small business owners.

Comprehensive support package includes funding and training

OpenAI has committed to hosting webinars and workshops across six Indian cities, awarding up to US$100,000 in API credits to 50 IndiaAI-approved startups and fellows, organizing hackathons across seven states with a target reach of 25,000 students, and supporting the training of one million teachers in generative AI technologies.

IndiaAI CEO Abhishek Singh emphasized the importance of accessible compute resources for AI development, stating that around 34,000 GPUs are now available to developers in India at globally competitive rates. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, joining the event virtually, called the initiative a significant step toward ensuring innovation benefits all citizens. "The OpenAI Academy will strengthen India's AI Mission by enabling greater community learning and accelerating the creation of locally relevant solutions," he said.

The OpenAI Academy platform includes free resources such as videos, hands-on modules, expert-led workshops, and peer-learning communities. Its expansion into India marks a major milestone in OpenAI's global efforts to foster inclusive AI education and empower innovation across diverse populations.
