Noida-based Sahasra Electronic Solutions, an affiliate with Sahasra Group, intends to launch the first made-in-India computer motherboard in November.
Financial Express quoted Amrit Manwani, chairman and managing director of Sahasra Group, saying they are the first Indian company to design the motherboard in India, adding that their products, expected to be priced between INR6,000–7,000 (US$72–84), will be 10–15% cheaper than those made and imported into India by Chinese brands.
According to the Times of India, Sahasra's motherboard products are presently undergoing testing and will be based on the Intel 13th-generation chipset.
In addition to PC motherboards, Sahasra's LED driver chips are in the trial production phase and are anticipated to become available within the next few months. Sahasra Electronics, the group's EMS and PCB manufacturing subsidiary, invested INR7.5 billion in setting up an ATMP plant in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.
Once Sahasra begins shipping its PC motherboards, it would be a boon for India's strategy to localize the IT hardware supply chain. The Indian government announced in August that imports of tablets, notebooks, all-in-one PCs, and ultra-slim form factors will require a license for imports starting in November.
However, it remains to be seen whether Sahasra will begin mass-producing electronic products, including LED drivers, hard disks, and motherboards that it had announced forays into. Sahasra Semiconductors previously scheduled the mass production of memory modules by the end of 2022, but the plan did not come to fruition.
