India has become the world's biggest smartwatch market. India-based conglomerates, including Tata and Vedanta, are eyeing electronics manufacturing as global supply chain relocation is picking up speed.

India becomes the biggest smartwatch market

According to Counterpoint Research's latest market tracker, smartwatch shipments in India grew by 171% and became the largest smartwatch market during the third quarter of 2022. Apple grabbed more than 50% of India's HLOS (higher-level OS) smartwatch market.

Tata reportedly eyeing Wistron's Indian plant

The Economic Times, citing unnamed sources, reported that Tata had initiated discussions with Wistron to buy the latter's Indian plant for INR40-50 billion (US$500 million).

Vedanta may set up electronics manufacturing cluster in eastern India

Financial Express reported that Vedanta is in talks with the government of Odisha to set up an electronics cluster to make TVs, smartphones, laptops, and possibly semiconductors and display panels.

Mariti says chip shortage worsens

Reuters reported that Maruti Suzuki India said a shortage of electronics components, including chips, is expected in December, which may bring more impact on its vehicle production than in recent months.
