Samsung Display (SDC) and LG Display (LGD) showcased new applications of OLED display technology at the Korea Display Exhibition 2022 taking place in Seoul during August 10-12, according to South Korea-based media reports.

At a keynote speech, SDC executive vice president Ho Sun indicated that consumers' display demand has shifted from Bigger - focusing on large sizes and high-resolution levels to Better - focusing on more real display effects, and QD(quantum dot)-OLED is the display technology to satisfy the needs.

SDC began production of 55- and 65-inch TV-use QD-OLED panels for TVs of Samsung Electronics and Sony at the end of 2021 and has reached a yield rate of 85%.

QD-OLED panels feature wider viewing angles, XCR (superior color range), extended HDR (high dynamic range), and better display effects in gaming use. In particular, XCR with a peak brightness of 1,500nits can make users experience vivid display by virtue of QD red-, green- and blue-light-emitting layers.

SDC began volume production of QD-OLED panels in the second half of 2022 and has been improving the technology since then.

LGD shipped 20 million TV-use OLED panels in 2021 and expects increasing shipments of such panels in the future, company vice president Michael Kang said.

LGD will mainly push its OLED technology for applications including gaming, transparent displays and portable displays.

For use in gaming, LGD will make OLED panels bendable and improve WOLED (white OLED) technology to enable display with quicker response and to be unsusceptible to ambient lighting. LGD is cooperating with clients in planning for launching products used in gaming.

LGD has produced 55-inch transparent OLED panels, becoming the sole maker of transparent OLED panels currently, and will extend production to 77-inch and small-size transparent OLED panels in 2023.

Compared with transparent LCD panels that only have a transparency rate of 10%, transparent OLED panels can reach a percentage of 45% and have been broadly used in shopping centers, museums and subway stations.

For portable displays, LGD will offer 22-inch WOLED panels for use in portable devices at the end of 2022.
