Networking/communication device vendor D-Link has joined Metaverse Standards Forum, becoming the first member from networking/communication sector.

With founding members including Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, Qualcomm Technologies and World Wide Web Consortium, Metaverse Standards Forum was established in June 2022 and is hosted by Khronos Group.

The forum is a venue for cooperation between standards organizations, companies, researchers and universities to foster development of interoperability standards to accelerate development and deployment of metaverse.

So far, there are no standardized specifications of hardware and software used in metaverse, making hardware-software interoperability a serious problem to be solved.

The core of metaverse is a human-machine interactive model that makes virtuality feel as reality by virtue of immersion, said D-Link CEO Chang Chia-jui. Being a 3D module of reality, metaverse has to be based on open standards for converging various technologies to thoroughly realize its potential applicability, Chang noted.

D-Link has reported consolidated revenues of NT$1.474 billion (US$50 million) for June, increasing 6.10% sequentially and 17.90% on year; those of NT$4.157 billion for second-quarter 2022 rose 3.54% sequentially and 23.39% on year; and those of NT$8.172 billion for January-June grew 12.46% on year.
