CATL's Qilin battery has higher energy density than Tesla 46800

The world's largest battery maker CATL launched its third-generation cell-to-pack (CTP) battery Qilin last week with a maximum energy density of 255Wh/kg for ternary battery system and 160Wh/kg for LFP battery system.

The new battery supports a hot start in five minutes and can charge from 10% to 80% within 10 minutes.

The Qilin could have a 13% higher energy density than Tesla's cylinder battery 46800.

Tesla occupied 20% of CATL's production capacity last year. Tesla's in-house 46800 battery could potentially become a standardized battery for EVs as it has excellent fast-charging speed.

CATL launching Qilin at this moment marks a new chapter for the battery industry and brings high-performance batteries to the competition floor.

The module-less battery uses 40% fewer components, has a 15-20% higher utilization rate, incurs significantly lower costs, provides 1,000 kilometers in range, and has four times bigger areas for heat transfer.

Another highlight is the new structure of the battery where CATL puts the liquid colling functional parts between adjacent cells to enable the cells to cool down rapidly in extreme circumstances and to effectively prevent abnormal thermal conduction among cells.

Shortly after the launch, Li Auto founder Li Xiang re-posted the battery news on his social media with the caption "see you in 2023." CATL vaguely confirmed its partnership with Li Auto by commenting: Qilin has Li Xiang.

Sources revealed that Nezha Auto is also adopting Qilin.

Changan Auto's EV brand Avatr, where CATL has the second-largest stakes, might also adopt Qilin.
