Lens module makers Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO), viewing that global demand for smartphones has slowed down, has been developing lens modules for other applications, mainly automotive cameras and VR/AR devices.
Laragn has cooperated with clients to develop lens modules used in VR devices, company CEO Lin En-ping has said.
For automotive camera applications, Largan established a wholly-owned subsidiary, Largan Industrial Optics, in fourth-quarter 2021, Lin noted.
While smartphone-use modules consist completely of plastic lens pieces, molded glass lens pieces are more competitive for automotive cameras. Therefore, Largan plans to set up molded glass lens piece production lines at a new factory under construction.
GSEO has been in talks with clients about lens modules for VR devices, while those for AR devices will not be developed for the time being, company president Lee Kuo said.
GSEO focuses 2022 capex on VR/AR-use lens modules as well as infrared and laser optical devices. The company hopes to hike the revenue proportion for VR/AR-use lens modules from below 10% currently to over 30% in three years.
