Taiwan recorded imports totaling US$16.85 million for PV modules produced in Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand in first-quarter 2022, 28.82% more than the US$13.08 million recorded in the four years from 2018 to 2021, according to industry sources.

In 2021, Taiwan-based PV module makers, in order to reflect China-based makers' hikes in price for solar wafers, raised contract prices, prompting local clients to seek alternative supply from Southeast Asia, the sources said.

The Taiwan government aims at cumulative total PV installation capacity of 20GWp in 2025 and 30GWp in 2030 in line with the goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions in 2050. Taiwan-based solar cell and PV module makers United Renewable Energy, TSEC and Motech Industries have expanded PV module production capacities to meet expected large increases in domestic demand.
