Pure-play foundry United Microelectronics (UMC) has acquired nearly NT$6 billion (US$215.4 million) worth of machinery equipment from Applied Materials, according to company filings with the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE).

UMC announced the purchase of a batch of equipment for nearly NT$1.5 billion from Applied Materials. In separate filings with the TWSE, UMC disclosed it had acquired a total of about NT$4.5 billion worth of equipment from Applied Materials for United Semiconductor (Xiamen), its 12-inch foundry subsidiary in China.

Also on behalf of United Semi (Xiamen), UMC said it had purchased equipment from KLA-Tencor for NT$1.34 billion.

UMC unveiled plans to spend US$3 billion in capex this year. As much as 90% of the planned capex will be used for 12-inch fab manufacturing, according to the pure-play foundry.

Up to 80% of the orders UMC has secured demanding 28nm process manufacturing are multi-year contracts, company president Jason Wang was quoted as saying in previous reports. UMC reported record revenue and profits for 2021, crediting the positive performance to "a surge in our 28nm business."
