China car sales forecast at 26.3 million units in 2021

There will be 26.3 million cars sold in China in 2021, growing 3.8% on year, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

There were 25.311 million cars sold in China in 2020, slipping 1.9% on year, CAAM said. The coronavirus pandemic significantly impacted cars sales in the first three quarters of 2020, but demand quickly rebounded in the fourth quarter, according to Chinese media reports.

The 2020 car sales consisted of 20.178 million passenger cars, down 6.0% on year; 5.133 million commercial vehicles, including buses and trucks, up 18.7%; and 1.367 million new energy cars, up 10.9%, CAAM indicated.

China-based automakers accounted for 38.4% of the 2020 sales of passenger and new energy cars in China; Germany-based ones, 23.9%; Japan-based ones, 23.1%; US-based ones, 9.6%; Korea-based ones, 3.5%; and France-based ones, 0.3%, according to Chinese media reports.
